After coming to BUSY Ability over 18 months ago, Nathan has since secured employment and gained many useful skills, as well as confidence, through our School Leaver Employment Support service. The NDIS funded service supports young people to transition from school into employment by working closely with participants to develop skills relevant to their employment goals.

Almost six months have passed since Nathan began work in a picker-packer role at Macro Mike in Burleigh Heads and, despite living with autism, he is considered punctual and reliable.

Nathan’s Employer at Macro Mike, Mark, said “There’s opportunities for all people in all industries if you give them a chance.”

“If you give them the time and the training needed to take on this role, they concentrate and perform very well for us.”

Nathan received endless support from BUSY Ability as they helped him to become work-ready, saying “They helped me create a resume which I didn’t know how to do on my own, and they also helped me with teamwork, confidence and public transport.”

Before starting work, Nathan was not comfortable with taking public transport, however, BUSY Ability supported him through it and helped build his confidence to take the bus to work.

When asked what he enjoys about the School Leaver Employment Support program, Nathan said, “I love getting to meet new people and friends.”

CEO for BUSY Ability, Jason Shield, stated, “For many people living with disability, there are barriers to finding work that others would take for granted, for instance catching public transport can feel overwhelming for some.  The School Leaver Employment Support service works with the individual to support them every step of the way. We are really pleased to see Nathan’s incredible progress, to become financially independent and contributing through meaningful employment. Everyone has that right.”
