As someone who is visually impaired, Dylan has faced significant barriers to employment, with many employers unsure how to accommodate his needs in the workplace. Dylan came to BUSY Ability’s Cairns office in search of a fresh start, seeking support from their government funded, Disability Employment Services program.
After meeting with BUSY Ability, the team recognised Dylan was eager to work and quick to learn. They were committed to helping Dylan secure meaningful long-term employment. The Cairns team actively marketed Dylan to various employers, with each meeting improving Dylan’s state of mind and renewed hope that he’d secure a job. During this time, one employer stood out— South Pacific Laundry (SPL). They demonstrated a genuine commitment to inclusivity and were eager to make the necessary adjustments to accommodate Dylan in their workplace.
After a successful meeting, Dylan was offered a work trial and he jumped on this opportunity, excelling in his trial. His hard work paid off, leading to a job offer as a dispatch worker for eight hours a week. Now, Dylan enjoys his role and is thriving as a valued member of the SPL team.
BUSY Ability team member Jessica Binutti, who supported Dylan to find work, reflects on Dylan’s journey, stating, “Since meeting Dylan, I have seen his confidence grow dramatically. He was always open to anything and willing to give it a try. When he was offered the role at SPL, you could see how excited he was that an employer wanted to give him a chance.
“We’ve supported Dylan with work clothing and reassurance, helping him gain familiarity with his tasks. I had the pleasure of going to work with him earlier this week, and he now confidently completes his tasks. He’s even hoping to increase to a third day of work each week.”
Dylan reflects on how his life has changed significantly since starting at SPL and said, “I cannot thank BUSY Ability and SPL enough for the opportunity I’ve been given. It’s a massive win for me and one of my main goals ticked off. SPL is great—they make me feel welcome, and everyone is getting used to me in the workplace now. They’re very friendly.”
Dylan’s story is proof that with the right support and opportunities, everyone can reach their full potential. His success highlights the importance of inclusive employers, like SPL, and the impacts they make in the community.
Dylan continues to grow in his role, serving as an example of how tailored support and inclusive workplaces can lead to remarkable outcomes.
