If you’re ever waiting in the queue at the drive through of Zarraffa’s Cairns, there’s a good chance you’ll be served by Alf. Apart from receiving your pick-me-up drink of choice, you’ll be greeted by Alf’s warm smile and cheery demeanour!

Now making positive strides in his employment journey, Alf’s job search was a difficult one. Living with cerebral palsy and an intellectual disability, Alf previously faced significant barriers when it came to finding employment. However, his persistence, combined with the tailored support from CoAct / BUSY Ability, opened the doors to new career opportunities.

CoAct / BUSY Ability is a provider of the Australian Government funded Disability Employment Services (DES). Providing support for people with injury, illness or disability to receive assistance into employment, the team work closely to assess and support people to overcome barriers to work and provide ongoing support once they have commenced employment.

Alf was first introduced to BUSY Ability through NDIS provider Breakthru, seeking support to help get into the workforce. “I wanted to get into employment, and after working with Breakthru, I knew BUSY Ability could help me take the next step,” Alf shared.

From the start, Alf worked closely with his Recruitment Partner, Blea. She took the time to get to know Alf and understand his skills and future goals. Blea and Alf discussed potential industries and companies Alf could see himself working at. One of the companies on Alf’s radar was Zarraffa’s Coffee.  Through their collaborative efforts, Blea secured a position for Alf at Zarraffa’s—his first real job. This milestone was a huge accomplishment for Alf, who had always dreamt of becoming part of the workforce but needed the right support to make it happen.

Since joining Zarraffa’s, Alf has thrived in his new role, gaining valuable experience and confidence. He’s fast become a valued member of the team and takes pride in serving delicious food and drinks.

“I’m learning new skills and I’m really enjoying my job,” Alf says, highlighting just how much he’s grown in such a short time.

BUSY Ability’s support didn’t stop once Alf was in the role. Blea continued to work closely with both Alf and Zarraffa’s Cairns to ensure he had the tools and support system in place to succeed. She helped Alf access funding for First Aid training, work clothes and shoes, ensuring he’s fully prepared for his new role.

When asked about the support he’s received from BUSY Ability, Alf couldn’t be happier.

“BUSY Ability is a friendly and nice place, and I’m grateful for the support and opportunities that I have received,” Alf says.

Every person deserves the right to contribute through employment and Alf’s story is proof that the right job can change a person’s life. Alf’s hours have started to increase, allowing him to have more independence and enjoyment in his life. Getting a taste of working life has flicked a switch in Alf’s perspective and he is now focused on fulfilling his dream of becoming a personal trainer.

“My goal is to become a personal trainer, and I’m working harder than ever to make that happen,” Alf shared with a smile.

Blea, Alf’s Recruitment Partner, reflects on his journey with pride, saying “Alf has shown incredible dedication and growth. It’s been amazing to watch him develop confidence and skills as he settles into his role. We’re excited to continue supporting him as he works toward his future goals.”
