On International Day of People with Disability, which asks us to ‘challenge the way you think about disability, and see the ability in disability’, the team at BUSY Ability, who support persons with disability into work, are asking businesses to take a closer look at the abilities a person can bring to their workplace.
To help break down the barriers that a person with disability may experience when seeking work, this week they have launched their AccessAbility Day which invites businesses to host someone for a one day work experience opportunity, and they’ve been really impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the local business community.
Below we highlight a few of the work experiences that have occurred for our clients during this week.
Arne (L) pictured with his BUSY Ability Employment Consultant, Jim Boyd at Pullman Hotel.
For six years, Arne has been working towards finishing his apprenticeship as a trade-qualified chef and his career goal is to become a Sous Chef at his favourite Hotel the Pullman in Brisbane City.
The Pullman Hotel embraced the BUSY AccessAbility Day and hosted Arne for a work experience day in the kitchen. Arne may be returning for more trials in January next year so his dream may soon become a reality.
Aiden Crozman (R), pictured here with Jess and Dan from PASFIELD Plumbing, is an aspiring Apprentice Plumber.
PASFIELD Plumbing owners Dan and Jess were more than happy to support AccessAbility Day, providing an opportunity for Aiden who is looking to start his career as an apprentice plumber.
Aiden says he “hasn’t met anything that doesn’t wash off and he loves to get his hands dirty”.
Leanne Wells, pictured with Brad O’Shea from Job Connect, has always wanted to see how the recruitment industry works and jumped at the work experience opportunity with Job Connect.
Leanne learnt first-hand during her day in the office and is even more keen to pursue her career in the recruitment industry. She is extremely grateful to Brad O’Shea, General Manager of Job Connect for providing her the opportunity to gain insight into the industry.
CEO for BUSY Ability, Jason Shield stated “Just one day work experience can mean so much to someone, providing them confidence and an insight into an industry that they are interested in working in. For business owners, they could also find the perfect employee so there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain”.
