Sometimes life can throw unexpected curve balls. This was the case for Luke, who was a scaffolder working in a Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) position. However, Luke’s life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which led to multiple surgeries on his skull and an intensive course of chemotherapy.

The physical and emotional toll of his treatments made continuing his work as a scaffolder in his FIFO role too difficult. Unwilling to let his medical diagnosis control his life, Luke signed up with BUSY Ability, a Disability Employment Services provider. BUSY Ability helped Luke secure two different jobs, however Luke’s deteriorating health forced him to focus again on his health before he was ready to continue in his employment journey.

Luke didn’t let these setbacks keep him down and with the assistance of his Recruitment Partner at BUSY Ability, Ainslie, he secured a job interview at solar energy supplier, IINERGY. He nailed the interview and began working as a call centre operator in their customer support team.  Luke stated, “Ainslie went through interview skills, helped with applications, cheered me up when I encountered setbacks and never gave up on helping me find the right job.”

Luke loves his new position and the positive atmosphere his employer has created. The only downside to the role is that Luke’s daily commute is an hour and forty-five minutes each way on public transport. To counter this, BUSY Ability has recently supported him with an electric scooter which will save Luke up to 30 minutes on his travel time to and from work.  “It will cut down my travel time and give me a better work-life balance. I’m keen to start using it,” said Luke.

At IINERGY, Luke’s hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed, and he has been recognised as a reliable and dependable employee. His commitment to his job and positive attitude is evident from the recognition he receives from his colleagues and supervisors. Tony, Luke’s manager at IINERGY, went on to say, “Luke consistently demonstrates remarkable reliability and dedication, making him an invaluable asset to our small team. Luke’s commitment to excellence and positive attitude has not only contributed to our team’s success but has also set a high standard for all of us.”

Luke’s story is one of perseverance and success, showing that with the right support and mindset, positive outcomes are possible. When asked what he’d say to others interested in registering with BUSY Ability Luke replied, “Jump onboard, BUSY Ability will change your life.”

Luke with the electric scooter provided by BUSY Ability to assist him reduce travel times to and from his new employment.
