Overcoming Challenges and Finding Success: Josh’s Story

Referred to BUSY Ability’s Disability Employment Services program through his NDIS support worker, Josh was keen to find some work and earn his own money.

How BUSY Ability Helped Josh Find Employment

Josh, who lives with an intellectual disability, was assessed as being able to work eight hours per week so the team at BUSY Ability got to work in finding a suitable employer who could use the extra pair of hands.

It wasn’t long before Josh was placed as a labourer with Wheelers Concreting on the Gold Coast. Wheelers work on a variety of residential and commercial construction projects across South-east Queensland.

BUSY Ability assisted Josh by providing all the necessary PPE clothing required, as well as fuel cards to enable his NDIS support worker to get Josh to and from work.

Josh has really enjoyed the work and feeling part of the team, he works two days a week undertaking a four hour shift each day. The other team members at Wheelers Concreting are also enjoying Josh’s cheeky sense of humour and the camaraderie he brings to the team.

Working with the company since January this year, Josh said, “My favourite part about work is hanging with the boys and being able to spend my money on some new hats!”

Stacey Turnbull, CEO of BUSY Ability, said, “It’s wonderful to see the joy that work has brought for Josh and that Josh has brought to his new work team too! Feeling part of a community, having that social interaction and sense of purpose is vital for any person’s happiness and wellbeing.

The Importance of Disability Employment Services

“Through the Australian Government’s Disability Employment Services program, BUSY Ability assess each individual and focus on their capabilities. Everyone has something they can contribute to the workplace and being given the opportunity to do so is important not just for the individual but for creating diverse and inclusive work teams. An inclusive workplace is proven to have positive impacts for a business, including increased staff morale and customer engagement.”
