During Disability Action Week 2023, we look at what it means to a person with disability to find meaningful and secure employment. Being able to contribute, earn money and make social connections through work is essential for a person’s overall wellbeing and sense of belonging. Take Kalvin’s story for example!
Life can often take us by surprise and throw us curveballs, but Kalvin is a shining example of never giving up, no matter how circumstances change. Navigating a tough period in his life and coming through the other side, Kalvin’s story is living proof that when one door closes, another one opens. BUSY Ability had previously assisted Kalvin to secure a role as a concierge with RACV Royal Pines Resort. However, he wasn’t getting consistent hours in that position which led him to reengage with BUSY Ability in the hopes of finding more secure work. Expecting his first child, the need to provide for his growing family weighed heavily on Kalvin’s mind.
Throughout this challenging period, Kalvin found support from the Palm Beach BUSY Ability team. They assisted in a multitude of ways, including updating his resume, marketing Kalvin to employers, preparation for job interviews and providing work attire and fuel assistance. When the opportunity to join the Burleigh Bunnings Warehouse team presented itself, both Kalvin and the Palm Beach BUSY Ability team recognised it as a golden opportunity. Kalvin successfully completed his induction and his first few weeks at Burleigh Bunnings Warehouse have been a great success!
Recruitment partner Jessica Allen, reflecting on Kalvin’s journey, remarked, “Kalvin consistently exuded openness, positivity and eagerness to embrace any support we could offer in his pursuit of employment. He is genuinely a wonderful individual.”
