A few years ago Shane Kerr had to have his foot amputated as a result of complications from an accident. He now has a prosthetic foot but had struggled to find work, even though he was ready, willing and able to do most things.
When Shane came to BUSY Ability after seeking work for quite some time without result, his confidence was quite low so his Employment Consultant at BUSY Ability set some goal-setting activities to try and build up Shane’s confidence first.
An opportunity then came up to do a 20-week commercial traineeship cookery course through KidzFoodz, a social enterprise arm of Icon Training. Shane has now completed that course and enjoyed it immensely.
Volunteering at Gold Coast University Hospital, Shane supports other people going through similar events to what he went through – helping them to come to terms with the changes that having a disability can mean in their life and showing them there is a positive way forward. It means a lot to Shane that he can help others.
Shane underwent a work trial and is now working in a café and Coomera and is thrilled to be earning money and utilising his cooking and hospitality skills.
CEO for BUSY Ability, Jason Shield stated “At BUSY Ability we have the pleasure to get to know people like Shane who live with disability, have a broad range of skills and are still capable of work yet often miss out on roles due to the focus on the disability rather than their abilities. Shane’s positivity and reliability is a real asset to any business and I hear the customers are also appreciating his hospitality as well”.
Shane said “I am so grateful for the support BUSY Ability has shown me, I am really happy to be working again”.
