How School Leaver Employment Support helped Will into a Telecommunications Apprenticeship

Transitioning from school can be a particularly daunting time, but especially so if you are a person with a disability.  This is where BUSY Ability can assist through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) School Leaver Employment Support (SLES) just as the support recently assisted Will Purcell into his career pathway.

As part of SLES, Will, a student at Ballina High, met one-on-one with Craig Wilson from BUSY Ability on a weekly basis. Initially they sat down together and assessed what direction Will wanted to take, taking into consideration Will’s interests, his natural abilities and past work experience.

After exploring a few different industries and undertaking work sampling opportunities, Will expressed an interest in technology and electrical work as something he would enjoy as a career. Over the weeks and months, Will was coached by Craig, attended multiple job interviews, until he finally secured a job with a local security services company as an apprentice undertaking a Certificate III in Telecommunications.

Nicky Purcell, Will’s mother, is overjoyed with the result of Will’s hard work with BUSY Ability.

“One of the most exciting things ever was finding out Will had been successful for the role! I am so proud of him and so thankful to Craig at BUSY Ability for the assistance he has given. Craig and BUSY Ability were always there no matter what Will wanted, whether it be applying for a job or just talking through an idea. Craig’s still there for Will too, ensuring he is settling into the role,” Nicky said.

“Will now has an exciting future and is already talking about a further apprenticeship as an electrician and then one day owning his own business,” Nicky further stated.

Lisa Smith, CEO at BUSY Ability, said, “SLES is an intensive support program where students and school leavers work closely with an BUSY Ability consultant for up to two years, to help transition from school. We offer career support, but also general life skills like budgeting, finding your own home, travelling and social integration. Will is a great example of how the program can provide a pathway to success for young people who are leaving school and we can’t wait to watch his journey moving forward.”
